A+T 2020 Speakers

The 2020 Anthropology + Technology Conference is taking place this Friday 9 October and Monday 12 October. It will be getting to the heart of the debates around the social and economic impact of algorithmic decision-making and algorithmic bias, across three streams: Fintech, Health Tech, and Smart Cities, plus a range of workshops on day 2.

Why This Conference is Different From Other AI Conferences

It’s a conference that is a little bit different, a little bit unique. What makes this conference different from other AI conferences is:

  • Social sciences: It emphasises the contribution of social scientists, particularly anthropologists and sociologists, to the design, development and deployment of emerging technologies. We need the experts in people and society to help us address the social and economic impact of emerging tech. Speakers include Prof Susan Halford (Digital Futures Institute, Bristol University); Dr Gemma John (Human City, London); Dr Erin Taylor (Canela Consulting, Amsterdam); Dr Kadija Ferryman (NYU Tandon School of Engineering); Lisa Talia Moretti (Goldsmiths). The conference is being supported by funding from UKRI (ESRC).
  • Interdisciplinarity: The conference brings together people from very different disciplines and perspectives. Over 23 speakers from academia, business, and the public sector will address topics in financial services, disease detection, data privacy and cybersecurity, human-centred design in smart cities, ethical best practice in tech, humanising data and AI and much more.
  • Tired of Zoom? So are the organisers and that’s why the conference encourages active participation. Grab the virtual mic and join the speakers on stage to share your knowledge and exchange ideas. Plus there are over 10 workshops on the second day (Monday 12 October) included in the ticket price.
  • Tired of all the AI ethics talk and no action? Join in the debates, ask questions, network, participate in the free workshops. Come away inspired and with practical tips and tools to apply to your work and research. Demand them at the mic!

The 2020 opening keynote is Nani Jansen Reventlow, a human rights lawyer and Director of the Digital Freedom Fund. Reventlow will address dismantling the systems of racism and colonisation embedded in digital technologies and how societies can create a better future for everyone.

In the evening, delegates are invited to experience a pioneering use of AI in a live, interactive, special performance of I Am Echoborg.

Ticket prices for the full two days range from only £20 for students to £95 for corporate delegates. Buy your ticket here: www.anthtechconf.co.uk. And while we actively encourage attendants to participate in the two live days in real-time, your ticket also includes exclusive access to the recordings after the event.
