Response Ability

Building a future where socially-responsible tech is the norm

Digital technologies, devices and data are woven into the fabric of contemporary societies. The digital and the social are now co-evolving — in a ‘sociodigital’ world — with emergent consequences that raise profound challenges for equality, social cohesion, and sustainability.

While there is much discussion about ethics in this new world we are building, what seems to be missing is a call for social scientists.

Response-ability brings together social scientists and technologists so that together we can build a future where socially-responsible tech is the norm.

The Response-ability Summit brings together international business leaders, academics, and innovators from many different fields including artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, design, law, machine learning, medicine, robotics, and the social sciences.

Our unique event is a “rallying cry for more transdisciplinary work” that explores “legal, policy, social science and technologist perspectives on making intelligent tech accountable.” By bringing the technology, data science, and social science communities together, new ways of thinking emerge about the challenges we are collectively trying to solve.

Our Summit enables businesses and organisations to design, develop, and deploy socially-responsible tech so that we can all benefit from this incredible technology.

The inaugural 2019 conference saw 150 delegates from around the UK and Europe meeting to discuss socially-responsible AI at the Watershed, a leading arts and media space, on Bristol’s historic harbourside.

The 2020 event returned on Friday 9 and Monday 12 October, this time online, connecting speakers and delegates from across the globe, and two major sponsors, Microsoft UK and Spotify, with funding from UKRI (ESRC).

The 2021 online conference again brought people from different disciplines and industry sectors together to foster discussions and share ideas on building, designing, and deploying tech responsibly.

How do we respond to the problems in tech using our abilities?

In our ‘sociodigital’ world, with its emergent consequences that raise profound challenges for equality, social cohesion and sustainability, the big question is: how can we be response-able for this world in the making?

On our podcast we interview innovators, business leaders, academics, activists, and change-makers, from different disciplines and industry sectors, all of whom are responding to the problems in tech using their abilities.
