Beyond privacy: thinking differently about data
For two decades, most campaigns to encourage public awareness and concerns on data and technology issues have focussed on protection of individual privacy as the key frame for their arguments. But despite some policy improvements, and widespread public concern about the behaviour of technology companies, there has arguably been little success in increasing public understanding of the importance of data and its protection in these issues.
For those looking to advocate for better policies, provide alternative technology products, and build public awareness and activism around technology issues, is now the time to move beyond the individualised framing of ‘privacy’ as the central problem to be solved? What are the alternative governing concepts available, and how and why would they appeal more effectively to different audiences?
In this talk we will explore these themes, and describe a new project that the Future Narratives Lab is planning to create new ways to help people care about data.
